The Sheppard's senior officers get temporarily taken over by strange beings and in that state, steer the ship into an anomaly... and into a different space and time where the Borg are still a threat.

Prelude

Location: Pinastri Sector, parsec 94

Alert Status: Green

Captain's log, Stardate 110828

The check-in with the ships at the Khitomer wormhole went well. No problems to report - all is quiet especially with the wormhole inactive at present. We also passed the Luranza on her way back and I managed to catch up with Captain Meril; it seems the epidemic has been resolved and is well under control. Also, the Retchans and Uretchans have managed to resolve their differences and have rejoined as one clan. They have decided to call themselves the Chenae.

A new start for a new clan, this should hopefully stabilize the Midgar sector and provide opportunity for Starfleet to make friends and allies. I think that is a fitting end to our time in the Midgar sector. We went through so much as a crew and this ship has seen many changes - to have peace be the final outcome makes it worthwhile.

Computer, end log.

Events

As the Sheppard patrolled the border between the Pinastri and Midgar sectors, something strange happened on the bridge. Most of the crew froze, while Captain Dwi, XO Kaelin Odriscoll and Lt. Commanders Hamelin and Coswell slipped into alternate personalities and started to address each other as "brother" and talk about the fact that it was "time". They proceeded to modify the ship's deflector to emit chroniton particles; a rift began to form ahead of the Sheppard, which the four officers referred to as a "portal" to "walk the path along the Light". The Captain steered the ship into the anomaly and, once the Sheppard was inside, the senior officers returned to their normal self, completely unaware of what had just happened, while the rest of the bridge crew unfroze.

The first thing the crew realized was that the ship was caught inside the anomaly and the deflector was overloading. Commander Coswell managed to cut power to the deflector, stopping the emission of chronitons and tossing the ship out of the anomaly... and into a dark and thick nebula. Trying to get their bearings, the crew began to investigate what had happened and found that there was a 10-minute gap in the computer records. The only clue was that a senior officer-level command code had been entered in order to modify the deflector. What was also clear was that the Sheppard had been displaced in space and time - where it had ended up was unknown.

The crew didn't have much time to dwell on it, however, as a Borg sphere suddenly showed up, intent on assimilating the Sheppard crew. With the ship already damaged from travelling through the anomaly and then being buffeted by the omnipresent material in the dark nebula, outrunning the sphere was a difficult proposition. Lt. Commander Marabana coordinated the launch of two shuttles in order to try to distract the Borg, but this only worked for a short while. An EMP was also detonated, with negligible damage to the Borg sphere. Finally, as the sphere locked on to the Sheppard with a tractor beam and started pulling it in, Captain Dwi and Commander Odriscoll initiated the self-destruct sequence - and then set in motion a plan to draw some antimatter from the warp core, rig it into a bomb and beam it out where it would do the most damage to the Borg vessel.

The antimatter device worked, crippling the Borg ship to a point where they would have to regenerate for a long period of time to repair the damage. Having broken free, the Sheppard limped away to effect repairs of its own.
