Prelude

Captain's Log Poison Toocool - USS Argonaut. Location: 2 LY trailing SS Astraios. Stardate 130124:

Science has boarded the two captured warbirds and is examining computer records for any clue as to how the mercenaries were able to affect the Astraionian sun and cause a massive solar storm. Cmdr Markus is monitoring the away teams and the health of the crew in liaison with the ship's CMO. The third pirate ship was damaged early in the battle and fled towards Treman, USS Mak'ala is patrolling the area whilst undergoing repairs, and is coordinating with the fleet to create a blockade around the planet. I await a report from LTcmdr David7 Bravin, my Chief Science Officer, before deciding our next course of action.

Report

Science Report, LTcmdr David7 Bravin, Chief Science Officer - USS Argonaut. Stardate 130125:

Sir, Science Teams have managed to access the computer systems aboard both captured Klingon warships.

Data found on one of the ships refers to a recent event in which an alien device has been activated and placed in orbit around the Astraios sun.

It is reasonable to assume that this device has managed to temporarily reconnect the lines of magnetic force around the sun and thereby cause the acceleration of charged particles resulting in solar flares.

The fact that solar flares produce radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum at all wavelengths and thereby disrupt communications and electronic equipment, was used by the Pirates to their advantage in attacking Astraios.

Knowing that the alien device is still in orbit around the sun means that the increased solar activity is likely to continue. (Previous theories suggesting that the solar activity will diminish in due course are therefore null and void).

Although from a purely scientific point of view, the recovery of the alien object (in order for it to be studied) would be desirable, having regard to the risks involved as well as the current problems resulting from the solar flares, it is RECOMMENDED that the alien device be located and destroyed.

Events

Reporting: Captain Poison Toocool - Commanding Officer, Stardate 130203

We set course for the Astraios sun to seek the alien device deployed to cause havoc within the sector. Science examined the materials aboard the two captured pirate vessels and determined that magnetic pulses might assist us in locating it, but we would have to get closer. Engineering reported issues with our dilithium, we were restricted to warp 5. Communications reported a contact, which turned out to be a disabled civilian transport lost within the asteroid field, engines had failed, radiation levels rising, slowly being pulled toward the sun. The XO took a shuttle with medical, security and engineering to rescue them. Meanwhile we sent out the pulses and finally located the device. Science insisted it should not be brought aboard the ship as it would disable our systems, and recommended it be destroyed. I disagree, we must save it and examine it for data. Finally we sent an unmanned shuttle to take it aboard. The shuttle has been surrounded by a force field and we are tractoring it as we head away from the sun, the system and the sector into deep space. Tensions aboard the ship are very high, the heat was unbearable and medical has innoculated us again against radiation.
