A fight with the mercenaries makes the Sheppard some new friends and a trip back to... Earth.

Prelude

Captain's log, Stardate 100724.

The Sheppard has picked up some unusual energy readings and what appears to be a ship, possibly in some distress, near what has been dubbed by our science department "the Delta Quadrant Badlands". Long range sensors are not telling us a lot, but with us being still on the lookout for the Denmark, it's well within our interests to investigate any unusual occurences.

The Sheppard should arrive at approximately 1200 hours tomorrow.

Computer, end log.

Events

As it entered the "Delta Quadrant Badlands", the Sheppard lost long-range sensors but was able to pick up a distress call, which turned out to be from an unknown vessel under attack by a mercenary ship. After taking out the attacking mercs, contact was established with the larger, disabled vessel and two away teams were beamed to it in order to render assistance. The humanoid aliens introduced themselves as the crew of the DSE Vortex. It soon became clear that something strange was afoot, as the crew of the Vortex stated that they too had a planet Earth where they came from.

As repairs were being made to the Vortex, the mercenaries returned with reinforcements. As the Vortex needed 20 minutes to raise its shields, the Sheppard bought the necessary time by moving to intercept the mercenary vessels but came under attack. Executive Officer Pedlar Blaisdale decided that the best way to escape was to get under the Vortex's shields. When the Vortex activated its powerful engines, the Sheppard was taken for quite a ride... which ended at planet Earth. It was clear from the slightly different appearance of the planet, however, that the Sheppard had ended up in another dimension or parallel universe.

The crew obtained permission to visit this version of Earth and the space station orbiting it, but were advised that they might run into their alter egos from this universe.
