Prelude

Commanding Officer Poison Toocool - Log, Stardate 120810:

Location: Class L Planetoid, 6 ly trailing SS Astraios -- Our mission is to rendezvous with USS Huitzilopochtli, on route from the Pinastri system, and escort her to Astraios Sector. We estimated 3 to 4 weeks travel time to meeting her. Signals have been intermittent, but that is to be expected given the Astraios effect and the proximity of the Takaar Nebula.

We rescued the crew of a cargo vessel from the interdimentional rift caused by a singularity, and from the clutches of Zhieela Bruxxls, pirate captain. They then tried to take over the Argonant, but failed. We discovered the freighter crew were from an uncharted Class L planetoid on the Sector border. We decided to check it out.

The planetoid is protected by some kind of metaphasic shielding that reflected our scans, we decided to enter the atmosphere at the north pole by disengaging a power source with an energy beam we felt would be undetected. After making our way through the shield, the grid seemed to repair itself and the shield is operational again. We chose to land near some hills at the equator, not far from what appears to be a settlement. We can find no signs of other technology among the inhabitants, which makes the existence of this shield all the more curious.

Upon entry, our crew began to exhibit some abnormal conduct, and behaviour on the bridge and elsewhere was erratic. However, the XO, being part Vulcan, was less affected, and used her medical training to find the cause. It turned out the shield generators play a high pitched squeal just beyond natural human hearing, and this affects humanoid brains adversely when they first come in contact with it. She has ordered hypospray injections to calm the crew and feels that longer exposure will mitigate the effects. We will need to check & be sure organic components such as gel packs were not affected.

In the meantime, the ship has landed but we need to run some diagnostics and work on shielding it from prying eyes before our planned away mission can take place. I've asked the XO to direct the work on the ship, and prepare it for a hasty departure if needed. After we are satisfied the ship is ready for all eventualities, we will undertake an exploration of the nearby village, which seems to hold the main shield generator. We should go in civilian clothing and try to avoid making first contact with the inhabitants.

For myself, that high pitched sound was at a frequency that profoundly affected my equilibrium. I have unhappily been confined to quarters by Dr Lane until the effects of my exposure to this frequency have disappeared.

Events

Reporting: Cmdr Genny7 Markus, USS Argonaut, Stardate 120812 - Location: Surface, Class L planetoid 6 ly trailing Astraios

We have landed on the L class Planetiod in a crater that helm felt would hide the ship to some degree. I have been left in command of the ship while the Captain recovers and rests after her bad experience with both the vertigo and being stunned. Before we make any moves to explore I have asked all departments to report on the exact nature of this planetiod, and also on the condition of both the ship and the crew.

Science tells me that the atmosphere is made up of oxygen, argon with high concentrations of carbon dioxide, but that we will not need suits or breathing masks. The planet surface is rocky and barren with humanoid life forms and limited plant and animal due to very little surface water. I also asked if there were any signs of pirate activity, none had been seen on the scans that had been made.

After final scans of both the planet and space to make sure that there were no ships in orbit I ordered the landing party to return to their quarters to change in to civilian clothes so as to blend in hopefully, and return to the bridge. When we all gathered again Dr Lane reported that he had set the transport to take us to the nearest settlement and had left orders with the transporter crew that they should stand ready for emergency beam out if we need it. Cmdr Quar left the helm with emergency take off instructions.

When we arrived at the settlement we were alone, everything seemed to be low technology. There were five small buildings, food already laid out on tables and behind one of the huts a fire with a large cooking pot over it. In the fields behind was a herd of animals. But at the other end of these fields was something which we had seen before, a sphere that when pressed spoke in an alien language which we had first heard on Treman. We returned to the front of the huts and saw a statue which we had also seen on Treman, and split up in to three groups of two each and went about searching the huts for clues. In the middle huts we found a lever which when pulled opened up the floor with steps down, down below we were surprised to see what Cmdr Quar recognized as a generator for the planet's shield. We needed to return to the ship, so having ordered everyone to put things back as they had found them, we made our way to the top of the stairs and went out having put the floor back and closed the door. The Captain needed to know what we had found as quickly as possible, should we try to take on the pirates by ourselves or wait until the Task Force could join us...
