The crew deposit their Effervo guests back on their occupied homeworld of Efferva VIII and attempt to find information regarding the Appolyon and Benton-A disasters. The planet's Sla'theri occupiers, however, have other ideas.
Captain's Log - Stardate 090722
"We are currently en route to the planet of the Effervo... Efferva VIII. We still haven't decided on our involvement nor have we decided on our overall way of dealing with the current sets of issues unfolding. I have little doubt that the Sla'theri are reprehensible... as the Effervo saw in my thoughts, I saw in theirs' as well. However, and regardless, I do not want to get caught up in their war.
I do want their information on the species that destroyed the Uvalu system however... One way or another, we will drop off our passengers and see what information we can acquire without getting too deeply entrenched."
With the Effervo now back on their homeworld, the Captain led an away team to the planet's surface, hoping to find the information their guests promised would be there. In anticipation of another encounter with the Sla'theri, the team armed themselves and changed into combat gear.
The planet's atmosphere was breathable, but only just. The surface was extremely marshy, and a heavy chlorine stench came from the pockets of vapour that periodically rose from the swamps. Not long after the away team arrived they were attacked by a Sla'theri patrol. Lieutenant Brouwer, unarmed, was forced to attempt hand to hand combat. The attackers were fought off and the team moved on cautiously.
Making their way towards the largest structure in a nearby town, Lieutenants Brouwer and Seriman both noted the architecture; it seemed as if it had been constructed for humanoids, something both the Effervo and Sla'theri were not.
Arriving at their destination the team once again came under attack by a Sla'theri patrol. The fight was more vicious this time, with Lieutenant Seriman and Ensign Ogleby both receiving minor injuries. However Dr.Skytower was able to treat them in the aftermath of the battle.
Making their way inside the structure they located what they had come for; three data crystals they were told would contain the information required. The data from the crystals was downloaded and the team beamed back aboard the Shogun.
They arrived just in time to see three Sla'theri cruisers on an intercept course, weapons charged. As if that wasn't enough, two heavy cruisers were detected further away. The Captain gave orders to disable the cruisers, which Lieutenant Teichmann followed until it came to the last of the three. It's navigational pattern was too erratic to get a targeting lock on. Teichmann fired a spread of torpedoes at random coordinates, hoping to confuse the enemy pilot, which he did. He was able to disable the third cruiser and the ship made to leave.
Unfortunately the two heavy cruisers would bear down upon the Shogun at any moment. Luckily, the science department had at the ready a new variant of the spectre-type probe to deploy. Once sent out, it mimicked the Shogun's power and warp signatures, luring the heavy cruisers to it. Once in range, it set off an electro-magnetic pulse, crippling the two aggressors.
The Shogun set off at once, with Ensign Ogleby under orders to translate the information taken from the data crystals.
