An ambush by the Red Sun Rising mercenaries gives the Sheppard an opportunity to make first contact with another species.

Prelude

Captain's log, Stardate 110115

We have been been holding position in the system BF 986, watching the approach of the oncoming ships. While we have been scanning, it appears that part of the flotilla has diverted away from Pinastri while a smaller group of vessels have continued on towards Pinastri.

Our scans suggest several of these are military-type ships, similar in design and make to the vessel that was detected spying in Pinastri. I wish command could've provided us with more backup - but it's sensible, with the multiple threats we currently face, to place most of our fleet at Pinastri. In relation to our current task, two vessels in particular appear to be nearly a kilometer long and appear to be well above our class.

(Captain Dwi smiles and stops herself mid analysis and thinks back to the words the admiral spoke to her when she first took command "go out and make us some friends").

(She takes a deep breath)

Though of course, we are not here to fight these people but to make first contact - and that's what I plan to do. Starfleet in the Delta Quadrant needs to start making more friends. I have seen a worrisome amount of conflict in my time here and I can't help but feel that we are making ourselves unpopular with the locals. The Sheppard's time engaged in the Midgar Sector is proof of that - I often wonder if i could've made a more peaceful resolution, if i could've found a way to get the Denmark back without resorting to violence.

In any case, Command has not given us orders to approach these ships. Then again, they have not told us not to either, only to investigate and the most logical course of action to find out why they are heading towards Pinastri is to simply ask them. So when those ships get to within a suitable distance, we will approach and find out what this is all about. As a result, I've ordered the Sheppard off silent running, and to actively scan the area - which should highlight our position and let them know we are here. I will remain in the system for the moment, as the nearby asteroid field gives us a tactical advantage against a larger force if they decide they are hostile.

Events

While Sheppard, still well-concealed in the BF 986 system, was busy scanning the unknown oncoming flotilla of vessels, a small group of mercenary ships suddenly appeared and attacked. Although it took damage, the Sheppard was able - with the timely arrival of the flotilla, whose head officer introduced himself as Commander Barkin of the Alliance ship Vigilance - was able to destroy one of the ships. Another mercenary ship went critical and exploded, and the Sheppard was able to beam the crew of the third mercenary ships directly to the brig - where Chief of Security Jess Hamelin and Doctor Dana Dimsum interrogated them. As the prisoners tried to tamper with the forcefield, they had to be sedated - and one of them suffered an allergice reaction to the sedative gas used and had to be taken to sickbay for treatment.

Meanwhile, a small away team consisting of Chief of Science Kaelin Odriscoll, Chief of Operations April Coswell, Engineer Zoey Fhang and Security Officer Marshall Starflare was sent to investigate the mercenary ship. The away team manage to retrieve the ship's communication logs, the captain's logs, star charts as well as additional data on gallicite torpedoes.

On Sheppard, Captain Mulgrave Dwi made first contact with the Alliance by greeting Commander Barkin in the shuttlebay. The captain's conversation with the Alliance commander revealed a deep distrust of the Federation, its technology and its role in the Pinastri/Midgar sectors.

A later study of the communication logs revealed that the mercenaries, abandoned by the Nabraithians after the Badlands firefight, had been on the lookout for Sheppard for months, seeking revenge for the losses they had suffered.
