Astronomy is the scientific study that deals with the origin, evolution, composition, distance, and motion of all bodies and scattered matter in the universe. It includes astrophysics, which discusses the physical properties and structure of all cosmic matter. Astronomy is the most ancient of the sciences, having existed since the dawn of recorded civilization.

Astronomy is not to be confused with Astrology, which is a non-scientific set of beliefs about the influence of heavenly bodies on human affairs.

The Department handles the science endeavors like Stellar Cartography. Its main purpose is making maps and projections of space. Typical projects include mapping and cataloging objects such as stars, planets and spatial anomalies like Quasars, Pulsars, Black holes and Ion storms. Astrometrics is located in SS Tranquility Station and is under command of the Science Division.
