| Kes Ellison was born September 23rd, 2396 in Mak'ala, Trill (the capital of the Trill Homeworld). She is about 5/8ths Trill (unjoined), 1/4 "something else" and about 1/8th Betazoid. While she does have some minor telepathic abilities inherited, she finds them very unreliable and hasn't had the training or experience to be able to control them or even attempt actual telepathy. She puts it, "At best, I'm a decent lie detector, I do trust my instinct though". She doesn't feel she gets people's emotions right all the time, although she does often feel something fr om them, she just can't quite put a word to match it properly.
Kes learns at a much faster rate than normal (what takes humans a month takes her about 2 days, and her mother always told her it had something to do with her father's side, but wouldn't tell her more), has a very high IQ, and often lacks patience. Depending which side of the debate you are on, she's either strong willed and courageous, or stubborn and reckless. Her mother, who was a member of Starfleet, was Lt. Cmdr. Lanis Mar, 3/4 a joined Trill (fifth to carry the Mar symbiont) and 1/4 Betazoid. She was a part of Project Full Circle and decided to stay on the colony. Tragically, she was killed in a shuttle accident, almost a year ago. Thankfully, another Trill who had been through most of the Symbiosis Commission training (before being removed from it, as is often the case) happened to be available in the Delta Quadrant and was able to take the Mar Symbiont, so Kes at least feels like a part of her mother lives on. Her father is a bit of a mystery. His name was Kesinar Ellison (Kes is named for him). All she knows really, is that he was 1/2 Trill and 1/2 "something else". It appears to be a big family secret. He died about the time she was born, and her mother once slipped saying that he died so that she could be born, but wouldn't say any more. When she asked about it, she was told that it would be dangerous for her to know. She was also told that should would be told when it was time for her to know. Although, as her mother is now dead as well, it seems possible she may never know. Strangely, as the Symbiosis rules prohibit contact with old hosts family members, the new host of the Mar symbiont did send her a message from an untraceable, and nonreturnable source saying that he'd be watching her ((creepy, right?)) Kes says, about herself, "I am impulsive at times, and while I strongly believe in law, justice, and order, I can have a somewhat unhealthy disregard for the rules sometimes, especially minor ones that I don't agree with." (( to put it in RL terms, as an example, while she'd always stop for stoplights, She would often speed getting to them, as to her, the stoplight serves an important function while the speed lim it is just in her way)) She continues, "Because I do learn so fast, I often find traditional system limits, far too limiting, and frankly, irritating. I'm very much an at my own pace girl. Making me wait for the sake of making me wait, just because slower people usually need the slower pace, is likely to invoke some anger in me. They can go at their pace, and I'll go at mine." | |||||
