| Nora is one of the Kin'Li people of Relos IV. About 400 years ago, they were a low-tech, agrarian, pre-warp society. They were contacted first by the Nausiccaans, who had no compunctions against using the planet's resources and people. And so the Kin'Li, as well as a second sentient species on Relos IV, the Gul-Ku-Ren, were dragged into the modern age. The first Starfleet UF Starfleet Science team to encounter the Kin'Li dubbed them the "Hobbits of Relos" because of their passing similarity to characters of that name in an old Earth bedtime story. The Gul-Ku-Ren are much larger -- up to 8-9 feet tall -- and green. The Kin'Li are now the scientists and engineers of Relos IV, though many still wish for a simpler time and lifestyle, spent on subsistence farms. One of the natural defenses for this race is their livestock. Kin'Li "cows" are known by Starfleet UF Starfleet Science personnel as Relosian Fangbeasts, or Relosian Razorbeasts. They stand six feet tall at the shoulder, and have razor-sharp teeth for eating root tubers of the taeloo tree (which can grow to immense heights). They are highly territorial and aggressive. It is surmised that the Kin'Li keep their "cows" domestic though some sort of telepathy, and some Kin'Li are quite strong telepaths with other races. These diminutive people may have some other natural defenses, as yet unobserved. Nora was raised in a pre-electricity community, living on a subsistence farm. She was identified by a Relosian government-sponsored competition as a candidate for admission into UF Starfleet Academy as an unaffiliated race. Both Relosian species would very much like to join the Federation and throw off their Nausicaan occupiers. Nora, as the first Kin'Li in Starfleet, is an important step in that direction. | |||||
