History
The Delta Quadrant, 2386. Eleven years after the end of the Dominion War and five years after the end of the final battle with the Borg.
The Dominion War was at the time the most destructive and bloody war in galactic history. By the end of the war, the Alpha Quadrant had lost a notable power – the Cardassian Union – the Klingon Defense Force was set back for decades, and there remained a catastrophic death toll for all powers involved.
After the return of the USS Voyager, Captain Afsarah Eden started work on project Full Circle in order to examine events and species encountered by the USS Voyager on her 7-year odyssey in the Delta Quadrant. However, greatly concerned about the Borg rebuilding and seeking revenge Admiral Willem Batiste came up with the idea of sending Voyager back to the Delta Quadrant as flagship of the Project Full Circle Task Force. The mission was to cement old relationships and assess the feasibility of establishing a permanent Starfleet presence there.
The nine-ship Full Circle Fleet led by USS Voyager reached the Delta Quadrant using newly fitted experimental Quantum Slipstream Drive and on the recommendation of the Full Circle fleet, Starfleet Command chose the Pinastri Star System in the Nekrit Expanse region as the home for a Starfleet colony.
However, some short months after the Pinastri-bound fleet had departed, a war of unimaginable horror was about to unfold. The invasion of late 2381 was the historic attempt by the Borg Collective to completely exterminate the United Federation of Planets, Klingon Empire, and other allied worlds in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants and to subjugate the remaining worlds in local space. The invasion left literally dozens of worlds in the area of the Azure Nebula in utter ruin, decimating much of known space. As a result of the invasion, upwards of 40% of the Federation Starfleet was destroyed, and over 63 billion citizens of the United Federation of Planets, Klingon Empire, Romulan Star Empire, Imperial Romulan State, and other non-aligned worlds were butchered. The assault led to the destruction of many key worlds and 63 billion deaths.
It was the reclusive Caeliar species who in the end defeated the Borg Collective. The Caeliar had learnt thousands of years ago to harness the power of the Omega particle and agreed to Starfleet’s demands to attract the Borg to an Omega power source, before linking the Gestalt to the Collective Consciousness, where they managed to release the Queen. The Borg Collective then essentially completely broke down.
Consciousness, free will, and identity surged back to trillions of Borg drones throughout the galaxy, and the masses of emotions, whether elated or completely distressed, was felt through the Gestalt. The Borg Ships converted into ships similar to Caeliar design and trillions of former Borg drones were now free to do what they liked, though many of them chose to return with the Caeliar.
Today, some four years after the demise of the Borg at the hands of the Caeliar. Some adversaries of the Federation, including the Breen, the Gorn, the Tholians, the Romulan Star Empire, the Tzenkethi Coalition and the Kinshaya have formed what is known as the Typhon Pact as an antagonist to the Federation. Their plan is to make use of the temporary weakness of the Federation after the devastation caused by the Borg invasion.
In response to the Typhon Pact, the Federation and the Klingon Empire have reacted by expanding the Khitomer Accords, inviting the Ferengi Alliance, Talarian Republic, and Cardassian Union into their alliance. To date the threat posed by the Typhon Pact has not materialised in the Delta Quadrant. How long this stays the case remains to be seen.
As far as the Delta Quadrant is concerned, other key political powers that control significant areas of the quadrant include the Vidiians, Devore, Kazon, Voth, Sla'theri, Hirogen, Hierarchy and the Malon. Both Starfleet and UFS command acknowledge that whilst the future of the Delta Quadrant and the powers within it is unclear, and any attempts to outline the future is only speculation, a few relatively recent events will certainly shape things in the years to come. The demise of the Borg continues to affect the balance of power in the quadrant, but as to the exact extent of the changes, it is unknown. Only time will tell.
The release and subsequent scattering of the remaining Vaadwauur is also likely to have an eventual impact on the quadrant. Whilst their technology is relatively out of date, they possess an edge in that they know of many underspace corridors that are unknown to all but them. Finally, we must remember that the Vidiian phage was cured. The Vidiians are a technologically advanced species, and without the crippling effects of the phage, they have the potential to become a formidable power.
