Definition

A Research Facility is an independent science station that conducts field studies and laboratory experiments. Research Facilities can be housed inside a Space Station or Starbase or they can be located planetside depending on their original function. Research Facilities are designed with a great deal of emphasis put towards the safety of the personnel working aboard in order to ensure that specimens and other agents remained contained, they usually have redundant power systems for forcefield containment systems and are considered some of the most secure facilities in Starfleet.
