Name
Alexandria: The second largest city in the Earth Country of Egypt with a history that dates back thousands of years to the Ancient Egyptian Culture. Home to the Lighthouse of Alexandria, considered on of the original seven wonders of the Ancient World. Also famous as an Academic Centre of Knowledge, with the near-mythical Library of Alexandria being considered one of the most concise and diverse collections in the Ancient World. Named after Alexander the Great.
History
At the edge of the Pinastri System is the awe-inspiring Alexandria Station SS-004. Construction of this Jupiter-class starbase was completed in mid 2384.
Starfleet command has a long history of using orbital platforms for vital research and development purposes. The deployment of Earth Station McKinley, Jupiter Station, and the continual expansion of the Utopia Planitia Fleet yards above and upon the surface of Mars, illustrates Starfleet’s commitment to this kind of facility.
As part of the Ambassador class project, Starfleet had planned to build a set of operational spacecraft and then build six semi-complete vessels to keep as a reserve force, much as was done with the later Galaxy class. However, Starfleet decided to cancel this option in favour of increasing the reserve Galaxy force from two to six vessels instead. This decision came when the construction of the spare hulls had already been partially completed, so Starfleet was left with six Ambassador class primary hulls on its hands.
Various options were contemplated, most centring around turning the hulls into operational vessels. One idea was for a Centaur-style conversion, adding nacelles but not engineering hulls. However, Starfleet was not willing to expend even the reduced resources needed for this option. In the end it was decided to link the hulls together in order to create a space station; Starfleet had been planning to build a new station in Jupiter orbit, so this option would allow it to fulfil that need without having to design and produce new hardware.
The conversion went remarkably smoothly. Since the station was not considered a front line combat or defence station the weapons systems were removed, although the shields were retained. The hulls were stacked in groups of three, with each group linked together by bridging gangways. Various peripheral equipment was added to allow the station to fulfil its new roles. These included various scientific research projects, including a holographic research laboratory run by Dr. Lewis Zimmerman.
Since its construction, SS Alexandria has continued to be the home of the Academy and independant research and scienctific exploring deep into the Nekrit Expanse. Due to Academic expansion and issues pertaining to the logistics of the Station, Alexandria has not seen a permanant commanding officer to develop its potential as a station. This lack of personnel has cause the station somewhat to decline technologically however with the introduction of a permanant commanding officer and large crew presence on the station, Alexandria is beginning to see continual upgrade and system repair to bring it on par with such technological powerhouses such as SS Tranquility.
On stardate 101215, SS Alexandria made first contact with the Etherium Matriarchy, a parasitic race the posed a grave security risk to United Federation Starfleet. This resulted in an open continual conflict with the race, causing various attacks on Alexandria and resulting in loss of life both on the station and with the Academy.
Due to its position on the edge of the Pinastri system, it can be a prime target for attacks and for races that want to gain a foothold into United Federation Starfleet however security at both the Academy and the station have been improved in recent months to allow the station to be in a position to protect its occupants and serve in a diplomatic function for many new species that enter into the Pinastri System.
Crew Manifest
Construction and Initial Assignment
The exterior of Alexandria Station is impressively imposing, with two sets of three large saucer-shaped modules arranged one on top of another by a number of connecting beams, which allows internal transfer between the two halves of the station. The central areas on the top of the uppermost saucers carry an array of sensors and antennas, which facilitate communication between the station and vessels light years away.
At the top of the starboard saucer sits both the station's control centre that's responsible for regulating all of the projects taking place aboard the station, and the transporter-shielded Operations centre (Ops) from which station operations are conducted. The interior of Alexandria Station follows standard Starfleet designs in its use of colours, materials, and general layout.
Weapons and shields were initially given low priority due to the primary role of academia, engineering and science; however Command weren't blind to the obvious threats a facility like this would face. Shield systems of the space dock-class were included as well as a perfectly fitting weapons suite. Shuttle bays were also added, as well as a state of the art communications and sensor array.
Alexandria Station serves two equally important functions. The entire port side of the station is home to the Delta Quadrant’s only Starfleet Academy annexe. The station’s state of the art holographic facilities and fully equipped lecture halls provide UFS Academy’s numerous cadets with the best learning environment in the quadrant, and one that is even envied by some of the finest Alpha Quadrant annexes. Needless to say, a setting like Alexandria has attracted some of the quadrant’s finest scientists, academic researchers and professors.
The port side of the station is a hotbed of scientific and engineering research and development in such fields as Astrometrics, Warp Theory, Spatial and Temporal studies to name a few. The station’s mission is centred around new studies of phenomena in the area. It is also be responsible for co-ordinating explorations to unravel the mysteries of the nearby Sylleran Rift and to both maintain and establish new contact with species in the unchartered Nekrit Expanse.
