Named for the Roman Emperor Caligula ( full name: Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus and emperor 37 to 41 CE) though notorious for his short but troubled reign, and sometimes characterized as corrupt and brutal, Caligula earned admiration for ending the treason trials instituted by [previous emperor Tiberius, recalling exiles, and giving long overdue bonuses to the Praetorian Guard. He also completed a number of building projects started by the former emperor, rebuilt decaying temples, built a lighthouse at Bologne, began work on new aqueducts and even built a new amphitheater in Pompeii.
