History

In 2365, first contact with the Borg was a catalyst for a technology rush, placing Starfleet at the head of a survival race to combat this advanced species.

Realizing the need for defensive technology was immediate, Starfleet Command believed that it would be expedient to acquire advantageous technologies from other civilizations. Technology was shared amongst those that the Federation would establish diplomatic relations, but many species which were adversarial to Starfleet also had valuable defensive technologies.

A new project was covertly initiated to source these 'out-of-reach' technologies, known as 'Project Seraph'. The intended scope of this project was to use a small crew to travel into restricted space, infiltrate, collect and transmit these items or knowledge back to Starfleet. Goals of the project included:

  • Visual and sensor stealth capability
  • Survivability
  • Ability to Detect, Locate, and Recover Materials
  • Starfleet Deniability
  • Data and Transmission Security
  • High Travel Speeds to Minimize Exposure and Maximize Breadth of Use.

The crew was made up largely of Intelligence officers, with a compliment of Marines for physical security. In addition, a new android developed for the project, to act as a mobile platform to retrieve the technology on station.

Concurrent to the preparations of this project, was the design of the Defiant class ship, one of the classes that started Starfleet down a new path of ship building, designs more centered around combat capabilities. The Defiant class began development in 2366, as the threat of the Borg invasion loomed over the Federation. It was a joint venture between the Antares Fleet Yards and Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. During its design, records show 6 copies of prototype dev units were made, in reality a 7th was made, but requisitioned to the Project.

This seventh dev unit was removed from record, and never registered. However, it followed the evolution of the of the Defiant class in most ways. There were some initial deviations, however. The Daystrom Institute integrated specific Project supporting technologies. It was designed to synchronize with the android, both for maintenance of the same, and to allow the android to directly affect the ship as its main computer when synchronized. It was also equipped with modified forward, port torpedo launcher, which allowed for deployment of the android by way of torpedo tube.

Also installed was the treaty-forbidden phase cloak device and a recovered borg warp coil and assembly. The lone coil and assembly were proved to be enough to generate a transwarp conduit for the small Defiant class ship, though much of its control systems had to remain Borg technology, and so it's operators had to be specially trained. The typical Defiant warhead did not make an appearance in this iteration, as the main deflector had additional components that had to be permanently affixed in line with the ship.

The crew met their ship in 2369 and began local training. They were trained to use unconventional tactics and able to be deployed independent of a fleet. They dubbed the ship the Nightstalker, paying homage to both its stealth and the predatory nature of it's operation. It undertook its' shakedown cruise in 2370, immediately venturing out to perform the mission of Project SERAPH. The project was silently an overwhelming success, both in its ability to acquire technology, as well as utilize it's aberrant tactics to survive against overwhelming odds. The crew of the Nightstalker, while remaining professionals, became cocky in their pursuits, largely acting outside of Starfleet oversight.

This changed in 2374, when communications with the Nightstalker ceased. It was presumed lost, and with the strong data protection technologies in place on the ship, Command was comfortable with closing the file as if it had been lost. The technologies were too improbable to reproduce without the ship and android in-hand, and as the threat from the borg waned, the drive for the technology subsided as well. Project SERAPH was ended.

In late 2388, a science team from Pathfinder Research Station was dispatched to recover what was to be the Nightstalker. Under directive from Intelligence, files were covertly transferred and wiped from the computers on board. A piece of technology was also removed and destroyed through Intelligence orders. Once considered a sanitized ship, Pathfinder Research Station began to refit the Nightstalker for use by station personnel.

The prototype systems unique to the Nightstalker were abandoned in place, as supplementary systems to the cloaking device and the transwarp drive were found heavily damaged. Other systems, more conventional to the Defiant were easily repaired at the station.

In 2412, it was utilized to aid in a Fleet Action, answering a call from the USS Veracruz to aid in a show of force. A battle involving Relos IV ensued against a rogue sect of Nausicaans. In this battle, the Nightstalker found a battle-mate in the USS Erebus, acting as a shieldpunch for the Erebus' formidable firepower. Even still, the Nightstalker undertook significant damage, becoming crippled again, so shortly after being mended. Captain Nakajima offered to tow the Nightstalker back to Pinastri, and allow it to nurse from the Erebus' EPS, as well as exist within its fields. This kept the Nightstalker recoverable when it returned to Pinastri.

The Nightstalker was repaired, and uprated with a refit to breathe new life into the old Defiant. With the Treaty of Algeron dissolved in 2409, the old phase cloak was repaired, and rather than utilize precious materials for the newer, cleaner Quantum Slipstream Drives, it was decided to repair the transwarp coil system native to the Nightstalker in it's original form.

Other significant additions included a new warp core, a holo trainer for mission readiness, a fitness room, and a separation between sickbay and the science lab.

The repair established a new chapter in the Nightstalker's life, as Starfleet Command had decided it become a Ship of the Line to support operations in Sector 1. At 42 years old, the Nightstalker received its first registration, NCC-75092.
