History

The second vessel to bear this name, USS Shogun will be the second ship to be Captained by Ulrich Bechir after his return to Starfleet after a 10 year disappearance. The ship was tasked with the exploration of unclaimed former Borg space as well as defense of Federation holdings. Notable enemy forces, such as Kazon and Romulan forces, are bordering former Borg space, making incursions by them a likelihood.

Construction and Initial Assignment

Starfleet recovered a number of starship hulls and components in the late 24th century from Yard 39. Still recovering from the attack on Mars, the admiralty directed its engineers to repurpose the recovered starships. The Corps of Engineers assigned a team to each of the recovered hull classes, tasked with the responsibility of bringing the vessels into the 25th Century. The undertaking was dubbed the Yard 39 Project.

The team assigned to the Sheppard-class hulls was stationed at the San Francisco Fleet Yards and was led by Dr. Rotche Ortiz, who had been one of the lead designers for Project Miracle Worker. Ortiz ran his team efficiently and they presented a plan for the Gagarin-Class to Starfleet Command a month after beginning the assignment. The design was approved and shortly thereafter production began on the first Gagarin-class cruiser.

Enhancements

The Gagarin-class is equipped with a highly adaptable electro-plasma distribution network (EPS) which allows the class to make use of an experimental module integrated into the deflector array allowing for Gagarin-class vessels to produce protonic energy through their EPS conduits. This protonic energy is then used to create a refracting energy shunt through the navigational deflector which can be used to shear the EPS conduits on the target vessel. Upon use the system requires 8 hours to recharge fully to be used again. Preliminary testing has indicated that the system has limited effectiveness against self-modulating/self-adapting shields.

The secondary hull houses eight compartments of the starship’s Modular Rapid Deployment System. This equipment is designed to allow the starship to fulfill its multi-role functions without extensive refit. Each compartment can be used to quickly deploy probes, mines, and other equipment.

Holographic projectors are equipped throughout Gagarin-class vessels. These allow for emergency holograms to be quickly activated at any location as needed. The emergency holographic system on board Gagarin-class ships currently allow for the use of three Emergency Medical Holograms, three Emergency Engineering Holograms, six Emergency Security Holograms, and one Emergency Command Hologram at any one time.

The transporter system connects to six emitter arrays on the external hull.
